New York – In the United States 7 out of 10 Italian pecorino cheese are fake, despite deplaying explicitly the Made in Italy brand. This is denounced by Coldiretti. The recognition, protection and enhancement of the new “Cacio Romano DOP” brand is important also against widespread international agropiracy in the USA where the production of imitations of Italian pecorino – stresses Coldiretti – in 2015 reached the amount of almost 25 million pounds, with an exponential growth over the past 30 years, while the arrivals of the original products from Italy amounted to 10.81 million pounds in the same year. More than half of the production of Romano cheese and similar – says Coldiretti – is made in Wisconsin, but large amounts are also produced in California and in New York State. (9colonne)
