(December 20, 2016) The research of the innovative DISIT Lab (Distributed Systems and Internet Technology Lab) of the Department of Telecommunications Engineering (DINFO), University of Florence-occasioned by the Smart City World Expo 2016-have won the experts over. ‘Km4City’ has especially aroused a lot of interest in Spain. Paolo Nesi, Professor of Distributed Systems and director of DISIT Lab explains that it is “an application that offers 200,000 geo-localised services throughout Tuscany that are subdivided into 500 different typologies”. From tourism to cultural goods, citizens service to the weather service; the application has received more than 15,000 downloads. It is a supportive tool for both citizens and public entities. Nesi further adds, “we provide information on 20,000 public transportation stops, routes, and timetables throughout the region thanks to agreements with companies within the sector and municipalities”. Smart City World Expo 2016 has been an important showcase for this project in Tuscany. “We have made more than 400 contacts ranging from public administrators, consultants, and researchers”. The activity carried out by DISIT Lab has inspired Cagliari (Sardinia) and Odense (Denmark) to develop this application. (red)
