Istanbul. On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Italian Cultural Institute of Istanbul in collaboration with the Italian Jewish Community of Istanbul, presents the concert, ‘Voces de Sefarad, four centuries of Sephardic music’. The concert is a great tribute to the Sephardic Jews who were expelled in 1492 by the Kingdom of Castile and Aragon (which at the time also included Sicily and the Kingdom of Naples from 1501). They migrated eastward, settling in Constantinople thanks to the policy of openness and hospitality professed by the Ottoman Empire. From ‘Sepharad’, the ancient Hebrew name givent to the Iberian Peninsula and southern Italy to a lesser extent, Jews brought with them a beautiful musical repertoire in Castilian, partially transmitted by the manuscript tradition and partially passed orally. The concert – on Saturday, January 28 – is based on an ancient repertoire with popular roots. (9Colonne)
