Toronto. Francesca Vivenza’s work is on view until October 10th in Toronto in the garden of the Consulate General of Italy in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture. The installation “On the verge of” is the reproduction of a 4th century catapult. This work was commissioned by the Italian Institute of Culture at the Castello Italia, the celebration held at Casa Loma on June 4th for the Italian national holiday. The work of art is a threatening catapult and at the same time a big toy, suggesting two opposing concepts: the condition of the home implies instability or action of force, but the possibility of the launch stimulates the observer to free himself of these fears. Francesca Vivenza is a composite media artist who lives and works in Toronto. Her works include installations in specific places and artistic books, which she calls Experimental Itineraries. She explores themes of travel, conquest, and displacement issues, and questions the stability of values of commonly accepted individual identity, such as the home, country, and mother tongue.
