Sept. 23 – Strengthening the link between the latest generations of emigrants in Australia and the Umbrian homeland is the aim of the conference dedicated to the young Umbrians resident in Australia. The conference will be held in Melbourne in June 2014. The initiative was discussed in a meeting in the Australian capital between the Italian Consul General in Melbourne, Marco Maria Cerbo, and a delegation of the Umbria Region. The preparatory work of the delegation consisted of a series of meetings with Italian institutional representatives in Melbourne, with the most organized expressions of the Italian community, and with local cultural institutions. The Consulate General proposed to accompany the youth conference with promotional initiatives in the cultural and commercial spheres. The suggestion is currently under study and will soon be defined. In the consular district, which includes the states of Victoria and Tasmania, there are nearly fifty nationals born in Umbria, but there are many others who descended from Umbria ancestors. “It is a composite community – says in a statement the Consulate – which includes both the descendants of Italians who emigrated decades ago, and people who arrived in the last few years.”
