Nov. 13 – Ho Chi Min City recently hosted the International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Communications. The protagonist of the Vietnamese appointment was a student from Bologna: Jacopo Soffritti. During the course of the conference, his scientific work, carried out at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, was awarded the prize for the best paper presented by a student. Soffritti, enrolled in the second year of the Master of Science in Electronic Engineering of the University of Emilia, made a mathematical model applied to the codes of mobile radio systems with Professor Maria Luisa Merani and Professor Hans Jurgen Zepernick. Soffritti took home the “Best Student Paper 2013” thanks to a research paper entitled “Performance Analysis of Randomized Distributed Space -Time Codes in Nakagami-m Fading.” “The ability to provide an exact result for the analysis of radio system performance based on Rdstc codes – said Soffritti – is extremely important, as these codes are among the leading candidates to support multimedia services in future generation mobile devices.” The paper is the result of an international collaboration between Professor Maria Luisa Merani, Professor of Telecommunication Networks and Multimedia Communications at the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” and the radio-communication group led by Professor Hans Jurgen Zepernick at the University of Karlskrona in Blekinge, Sweden. “This positive result – said Merani – highlights by the dual return that opening to internationalization guarantees: for the student, it is a unique opportunity to study and research in an extremely challenging environment; for the teacher, the consolidation of activities with teams from other European countries is an opportunity to demonstrate the Italian researchers’ skills.” The research took place within the framework of Soffritti’s Erasmus experience after he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. It developed a mathematical model to characterize the behavior of a particular class of codes, the Rdstc – Randomized Distributed Space Time Codes – for the intended use in mobile radio systems, such as third-and fourth-generation smartphones.
