Nov. 18 – A classic Chianti from Tuscany is in the top 10 best wines of the year. The ranking, compiled by Wine Spectator, was dominated this year by Portuguese wines (port wine on top, and two other wines from the Douro region in the top 10). But sixth place is all Italian thanks to the “Chianti classico gran selezione,” made from 2010 grapes of the Castello di Ama winery. “Producer Mark Pallanti – writes the Wine Spectator – opened his company in 1982, and is very familiar with his vineyards. The San Lorenzo estate is a small valley, with 50 acres of vineyards planted in a mixture of limestone and earth. In 2010, he produced mainly Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Merlot, but the proud and vibrant red Chianti Classico produced this year is definitely the top of its range.” (Sis)
