Jan. 28 – Maria Teresa Caracciolo, art historian and researcher at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), is the keynote speaker at a scheduled event organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Marseille on February 10. An expert in European painting of the 18th and 19th centuries and of French-Italian relations during the Revolution and the Empire, Caracciolo will talk during a conference entitled “Pompeii and Europe: nature and history.” On occasion of the presentation in Naples (at the National Archaeological Museum from May 26 to November 2) of the exhibition “Pompeii and Europe. Nature and History (1748-1943),” the Insitute decided to sponsor a conference to review the charm of the famous archaeological site on artists from all over Europe since the beginning of the excavations, in 1748, to the dramatic bombing of 1943. The conference is organized in collaboration with the Aephae, the Association Euro-Méditerranéenne pour l’histoire de l’art et l’esthétique. The exhibition in Naples was set up by the Superintendency of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae, led by Professor Massimo Osanna. Its focus is to reproduce Pompeii as foreign sculptors and artists depicted it over the course of two centuries, from 1748 to 1943.
