May 20 – Italy’s diplomatic and consular network continues to work with the Italian Institutes of Culture to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. On June 4 at 11am, the Federico Fellini Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute of Budapest will host a conference on “War propaganda. The Journal of the Tyrolean soldier.” The presentation was organized by Davide Zaffi and Fernando Orlandi of the Research Centre on the History of Eastern Europe. The Deputy Minister of Hungary, Zsolt Semjén, will also participate. “During the Great War, one of the propaganda initiatives – explains a statement of the IIC – was the Tiroler Soldaten-Zeitung, a newspaper published by Tyrol’s Landesverteidigungskommando. It was a magazine with refined graphics that housed literary, artistic and advertising pages. The paper reproduced the works of numerous artists, and in the last years of publication, itr was directed by Robert Musil, at the time an already known and accomplished writer. The newspaper for a few months was also published in Italian (iornale del Soldato Tirolese)) and in Hungarian (Tiroli Katona-Ujsag), until now completely unknown and not available in any library.” The research promoted by the Research Centre on the History of Eastern Europe in various archives and libraries has been successful: they “discovered” the Tiroli Katona-Ujsag edition. And so, during the meeting, the events of the publication will be reconstructed, and the content and issues of the newspaper analyzed. The event is sponsored by the Italian National Committee for the Celebration of the Centenary of the First World War and the Hungarian Commemorative Committee for the First World War, in collaboration with the Institute of the Twentieth Century.
