5 August, 2015 – With today’s departure from Beirut airport, the “embedded” experience for 15 LUISS university students in the Italian contingent stationed in Shama, southern Lebanon, has come to an end. The Law and International Relations students from the Roman university were able to enter into direct contact with the various aspects of Italy’s presence in the UN mission: from operations to civil-military cooperation, the students witnessed on the ground the mechanisms by which a multinational peace mission develops and takes shape. The Italian graduates also met the Lebanese authorities and the Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti, who is currently visiting with the Chief of Defense Staff, General Claudio Graziano, and the Head of Mission and Unifil Force Commander General Luciano Portolano. The 15 students also visited Qana and the Roman ruins of Tyre, where they could attend the celebration of Mass according to the Christian Maronite rite. Finally, before returning to Italy, they met with students from the Islamic University.
