November 17th, 2015 – “The Siena University Plastic Busters Research Team is one of the world’s leading research groups on the issue of microplastics pollution in the sea, as evidenced by their involvement in a number of programs and initiatives both national and international,” explains Maria Cristina Fossi, Professor in Ecology and Ecotoxicology at the University of Siena. Fossi spoke of the Plastic Busters project, which studies the presence of microplastics in the sea and their impact on marine life. The University of Siena is now in Mexico for an expedition that will last until November 20, in the Sea of Cortez, that wants to assess the impact of microplastics on the fin whale, and then compare results with those collected on whale that inhabits the Mediterranean Sea. The project is a collaboration between Siena University, coordinated by Professor Maria Cristina Fossi, with the University of Baja California and the research group coordinated by Professor Jorge Hurban, with the environmentalist association Sea Shepherd.
