December 17th, 2015 – The Bio-on Laboratories of Bologna have developed a new type of bio plastic: the special grade Minerv Pha Supertoys was used for the first time in the manufacture of toy building bricks. Based on the revolutionary Bio-on biopolymer, 100% biodegradable in nature and already tested in dozens of applications (automotive, design and biomedical), Supertoys is safe, hygienic, biodegradable, and it meets and goes beyond the requirements of the Directive EU 2009/48 / EC, commonly referred to as TSD (Toy Safety Directive). The Minerv PHA Supertoys project, launched by Bio-on, to date has no commercial purpose and is intended only to demonstrate that it is possible to create specific, environmentally sustainable formulations, to make toys that meet the needs of children and the environment without sacrificing the functionality and aesthetics of the final product. “The presence of toxic substances in toys is still a very serious problem – says Marco Astori, President of Bio-on SpA – We are convinced that this new discovery may provide a decisive contribution to the health of our children. Also, Bio-on’s bio plastics are obtained from renewable vegetable sources of waste, without any competition with food chains, and are 100% biodegradable in nature”. Also interesting is the choice of construction bricks like those made by Lego as a demonstration of the innovation of this product. “We chose this product – explains Astorri – because it’s very difficult to produce. Tolerance is 2 thousandths of a millimeter and to be able to guarantee such a level of quality makes us confident that there is scope for future development.” The research project is open to all laboratories and companies in the world engaged in designing toys and aims, by the end of 2017, to build two types of bio plastics: Minerv PHA Supertoys type “R” (rigid and resistant) and Minerv PHA Supertoys type “F” (supple and flexible).
