Beirut – The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mario Giro declared himself “pleased with the opening of a humanitarian corridor, the first legal channel in Europe that ensures safe travels to help particularly vulnerable people fleeing war”. These humanitarian corridors were activated following the agreement signed on 15 December by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior. ” Today arrived in Fiumicino with a flight from Beirut a Syrian family from Homs, including a child seriously injured to an eye,” said Giro in a statement. “This is just the first arrival and it will be followed during the year by a thousand other refugees in particularly vulnerable conditions,” concluded the Deputy Minister. This action, in addition to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, involved also the Evangelical Churches in Italy, the Community of Sant’Egidio and the Tavola Valdese, to give a human and humanitarian response to the refugee crisis stemming from the Middle East and elsewhere.
