(Aug. 20) What does the extravagant baroque art have in common with the contemporary trends? A majestic exhibition held at the Kunsthaus Museum of Zurich until September 2 will try to highlight similarities and continuities between these two ages. “Deftig Barock – From Cattelan to Zurbaran – Proof of temporary life” presents numerous art pieces from Cattelan, Alessandro Magnasco, Bartolomeo Passarotti, Antonio Bellucci, Mattia Preti, Valentin de Boulogne, and Jacob Jordaens. The different ages maintain their own expressional space, yet it is possible to go from one age to another just by walking a few meters, thus allowing the viewers to question with new eyes the masterpieces from the past. “The main theme of the exhibition is the crude representation of reality – Deftig, in ancient Dutch means ‘big, strong, powerful and solid’” says its director, Bice Curiger, also former director of last year’s Venice Biennale. The Kunsthaus Museum, in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Culture of Zurich, are currently hosting the exhibition, which will also be open to the public at the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao in 2013.
