Oct. 22 – The Lipu oases of Bianello and Celestina, in the Reggio Emilia province, have entered the Natura 2000 network, a database of the richest European sites in terms of biodiversity. This recognition is particularly important because it finally inserts the two oases in a biodiversity protection program. The initiative started when the Emilia-Romagna region welcomed the requests of Quattrocastella City (for Bianello) and of Campagnola Emilia (for Celestina). The latter extends for over 11 hectares and is part of the Sic-Zps “Valli di Novellara” cultivate complexes – which extend for over 1800 hectares of irrigation and natural hills. The insertion of Celestina in the network directly affects the composition of the oases, now effectively united with the valleys. Bianello extends for 196 hectares and it is recognized as a Site of Community Importance because of its richness in wild animal and plant life, including orchids and invertebrates. “This is an important step towards increased protection – says Fulvio Mamone Capria, President of Lipu – both oases have now the potential to become natural reserves. For Bianello, it would be possible by connecting its territory to that of the Roncolo Park or the Canossa Castle valley; for Celestina, it is now possible to tae direct action to improve environmental standards benefiting the natural habitat of local species, as well as increasing the ecological connections between the oasis and the Valleys of Novellara”.
