Apr. 1 – The University of Parma continues to bring home major awards. The latest is the “Best Student Published Paper Award,” which was recently awarded to the engineer Nicolò Mazzali, a research fellow within the SPADiC group (Signal Processing for Advanced Digital Communications) of the Department of Information Engineering. Mazzali has received the prestigious award for “best article published by a student in an international journal.” His article, “CPM -based Spread Spectrum Systems for Multi-User Communications,” was written with Professor Giulio Colavolpe of the University of Parma, coordinator of the SPADiC group, and Stefano Buzzi of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. The article proposed a new and simple method that allows to combine two existing technologies, currently used separately in GSM and 4G, and so far practically incompatible. This new hybrid technology will transmit data at higher speed, save energy, and reduce costs associated with hardware components. Possible applications include radio connections via satellite for aircraft flying transoceanic routes.
