(Aug. 10) – The extension works of the Surgical and Pediatric Centre in Goderich, Sierra Leone, are in progress. The project is strongly wanted by Emergency, the Italian ONG founded in 1994 by Gino Strada and his wife Teresa Sarti, and Carlo Garbagnati. In early August, the new Intensive Care Unit and the guest house – built in order to provide free hospitality to relatives and attendants of in-patients coming from remote areas – were opened. The first guest was the mother of Sullay, an 18 months child in intensive care for a burn. Sullay and his mother come from the area of Bo, about 6 hour drive from Goderich. “It’s hard to describe – says a note from Emergency – the amazement of the woman when she saw her child hospitalized and under the care of local doctors, and when she was accompanied in the nearby guest house, all for free.” The works are also funded by the donation campaign through SMS texts launched in October 2010 which has enabled Emergency to collect 734.776 euro.
